Welcome to Taiwan

Introduction

Hundred years ago, when Portuguese sailed to the island, Taiwan, they saw the rugged mountain range and lush forest of east Taiwan. They were stunned by the view, and declared Taiwan “Ilha Formosa, meaning beautiful island.” After that, Formosa became another name of Taiwan.

We launched the worldwide travel of 12 countries in 2008. Every country has its extremely famous scenic spot. Compared to those countries, Taiwan has her own world-class tourism resources. Some of those resources are unique and make tourist want to come back again and again.

Taiwan has abundant geographical scenic spots, including Yushan (3952 meters), the highest mountain in East Asia, majestic Taroko Gorge, the beautiful coastline in Hualien, and various amazing hot spring.

It is believed that the first tribe settled in Taiwan is Austronesian people. They have lived in Taiwan over 5,000 years. After Austronesian people, Chinese from Fujian province of mainland China immigrated to Taiwan in the early 1400 AD, and then Hakka, another ethnic group lived in mainland China, joined the immigration. Today, there are 3 categories of people living in Taiwan: the aboriginal tribes, Fujianese, and Hakka.

In the 1620s, Dutch established a colony in southern Taiwan, and Spanish did it in Northern Taiwan. However, admiral Cheng Cheng-Kung鄭成功, the Ming court loyalist in exile, defeated the Dutch in 1662, and set up an country in southern Taiwan. The descendents of Cheng did not rule the country well. The Qing government defeated them and took over the island in 1683. In 1894, China fought with Japan because Japan invaded Korea. China was defeated, and forced to cede the Okinawa, Taiwan, and Penghu to Japan. Japanese ruled Taiwan for 50 years. In 1911, the Qing collapsed, and the R.O.C. (Republic of China) that was created by Kuomintang (KMT) took the political power. The R.O.C. defeated Japan and got Taiwan and Penghu back in WW Ⅱ. After WW Ⅱ, the civil war was broke between KMT and Mao’s communist forces. KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan with many soldiers and civilians from mainland China. Now the R.O.C. rules Taiwan, Penghu, Matsu, and Kinmen. The way of life of every tribe and the culture of every regime form the vivid tourism resources in Taiwan.

We think that a perfect travel should include not only seeing magnificent scenery but also having excellent food. Most early immigrants came from the coastal provinces of southeast mainland China, but KMT retreated to Taiwan with many immigrants who came from every province of mainland China. The later immigrants made delicacies more diversify. Now, the flavors of Taiwan delicacies are very different from those of mainland China.

The night-market culture is the most famous tourist attraction in Taiwan. People can eat many different kinds of delicacies in different night markets. Those delicacies are very cheap and amazing. We believed that the night-market food in Taiwan are the most outstanding among all Chinese countries.

Most tourists visit Taiwan because of the delicates, but, after finished their trips, they were impressed by “renqing wei (人情味)” , roughly means personal affection. Most foreign tourists love Taiwan because of not only the delicates and beautiful scenic spots but also “renqing wei”. The author of Lonely Planet Taiwan said that Taiwan has some of the world’s warmest people.
